How to Prepare for Your Branding Photography Session
If you've booked a branding session and are feeling a little nervous, you're certainly not alone.
One of the first things clients tell me is:
"I've never had professional photos taken before."
or
"I'm so awkward in front of the camera."
The truth is, almost everyone feels that way.
A branding session isn't about looking like a model or memorising poses. It's about creating a collection of genuine, natural images that reflect who you are, how you work and what makes your business unique.
With a little preparation, you'll not only feel more relaxed, but we'll also create a library of photographs you'll be proud to use across your website, social media and marketing for years to come.
What Is a Branding Session?
Branding photography is much more than updating your profile picture.
It's about documenting your business in a way that helps potential clients understand who you are before they even meet you.
Depending on your business, we might photograph:
- You working with clients
- Behind-the-scenes moments
- Your workspace or studio
- Products and tools
- Team interactions
- Details that tell your story
- Environmental portraits
- Lifestyle imagery
Think of it as creating an image library rather than a handful of photographs.
You Don't Need to Know How to Pose
This is probably the biggest misconception about branding photography.
You don't need to spend hours practising poses or wondering what to do with your hands.
My approach is documentary and relaxed.
We'll chat while you work, move through your space together and make the most of beautiful natural light. I'll gently guide you where needed, but most of the best photographs happen when you're simply doing what you do every day.
Honestly, just do what you best!
Before We Even Pick Up the Camera...
The most successful branding sessions start well before shoot day.
Before we lock in a shot list, I'll ask questions about your business, your values, your ideal clients and how you plan to use the images. Understanding your business helps me photograph it in a way that feels genuine and aligned with your brand. That's why I ask about your story, the personality of your brand, the style of imagery you love, the purpose of the shoot and the key moments you want captured.
Preparing Your Workspace
Your space doesn't need to look perfect.
It just needs to feel clean, welcoming and have plenty of natural light.
A few little things can make a huge difference:
- Declutter desks and benches
- Hide cables and chargers
- Remove bins and cleaning products
- Clean windows and mirrors
- Water plants
- Wipe fingerprints from glass
- Restock shelves if needed
- Prepare any products or tools you'll be using
What should I wear?
Wear clothes that make you feel like yourself.
If you don't normally wear a blazer, don't suddenly wear one because it's photo day.
Instead:
✔ Choose well-fitting clothing.
✔ Stick to colours that complement your branding or neutral, earthy tones.
✔ Layers add interest.
✔ Bring two or three outfit options.
✔ Keep accessories simple.
Try to avoid:
- Large logos
- too many busy patterns
- Neon colours
- Clothing that creases easily
- Anything you feel uncomfortable wearing
Think Beyond Headshots
Some of the most valuable images from a branding session aren't headshots at all.
Think about the moments that happen every day in your business.
Maybe it's:
- Making coffee before clients arrive
- Preparing ingredients
- Packaging orders
- Writing notes
- Using your tools
- Greeting clients
- Creating something by hand
- Working with your team
These small moments help tell a much richer story.
Gather the Little Things
The details help create context.
Depending on your business, consider having ready:
- Laptop
- Notebook
- Camera
- Flowers
- Products
- Packaging
- Branded stationery
- Coffee mugs
- Tools
- Artwork
- Ingredients
- Uniforms
If Your Team Is Involved
If multiple people are being photographed, let everyone know:
- What time to arrive
- What to wear
- What the day will look like
- When group photos are planned
The more relaxed everyone feels, the more natural the images will be.
